Policy Proposals

To City Council:

Area Median Income: The calculated AMI is still nearly $25,000 greater than the actual AMI presented in the census. We can ask the DCP to conduct new studies so that a more accurate AMI can be determined.

Deeper Affordability: The MIH plan can be adjusted to call for 40% affordable housing. This could be done by having affordable housing set aside at 90% AMI with a maximum income of $69,750.

More Subsidies: The number of affordable units that are currently available may increase if there are more subsidies provided to investors. This is because although they may be losing out money due to the affordable housing units, they would still be able to put 45%-50% of the units at market rate and would still receive money to aid in the construction of these new buildings.

Anti-Displacement Measures:  Current businesses and residents of Flushing West should be guaranteed that they will not be forcibly removed from the space that they are renting.

To the Minkwon Center:

Raise Awareness: By distributing pamphlets, posters and other signs, children will begin to partake in process and hopefully become frontrunners in this development. In order to educate the youth and increase their understanding of current issues, the Minkwon Center could distribute information at schools.

Break the Language Barriers: In order to overcome the language barriers in place, it would be easier to contact religious or other community leaders than can distribute the information to large amounts of people.
