The Purpose of Avenue Q

Avenue Q was phenomenal. Just like the Broadway poster states, Avenue Q is “Just like your life. Only Funnier”. When I found out that I would be attending a comedy play about puppets, I wasn’t really excited. I thought that in the play people would be dressed in puppet costumes while talking to one another, and frankly I wasn’t really pleased with that idea because I think that puppets faces and bodies don’t portray the proper emotions and actions that are essential to a play. Furthermore, even after living in America for six years, I still don’t get most American jokes, and thus I wasn’t really excited to attend a comedy. But once again, I was surprised. Although the play started a little bland, I soon picked up on the jokes and was able to laugh with the audience. Even though Avenue Q is labeled a comedy, I felt that underneath the play addressed serious issues that most of us face in society. Financial problems, the loss of direction after college, the integration into the adult world, the dread of confessing your identity are all problems that are faced by today’s society. Princeton’s quest for “The Purpose” was nicely portrayed in the play. It showed that you never really know what your true purpose is unless you go out in the world and find it. Most of us don’t have a clear and defined purpose in life. We spend most of our lives looking for the reason we were brought into this world, and like Princeton forget to see the reasons that are right in front of us. Princeton spent a long time trying to find his goal in life, and in the end realizes that his happiness and purpose in tied with the happiness of his friends and girlfriend. I think this shows a really good lesson, that we can find happiness in the happiness of others.

Lastly, I want to say that I was utterly surprised and very happy that we had the chance to meet the cast. This was a unique opportunity to glimpse the life of these artists and find out how they got involved in acting.  I think this meeting and the talk with the cast is an affirmation that artists can really make it in the world.
