Man on Wire is an amazing documentary that provides the true story of the unnamed character in Let the Great World Spin, the man who walked on a tightrope between the twin towers. Seeing several people of different nationalities and backgrounds work together to complete this risky mission and seeing how they developed and executed their intricate plan was very interesting and engaging. How they continually came so close to failing that several ounces of luck were required to keep Petit’s dream alive almost made it hard to fathom that Petit’s story is a nonfiction historical occurrence. I found great enjoyment in learning about Petit, what the twin towers meant to him, and what compelled him to make this dangerous walk. One thing that surprised me is that the emergence of Petit’s dreams actually predated the completion of the twin towers. At the origination of his dream, the twin towers still were not a complete, visible entity, but that didn’t prevent him from aspiring to accomplish this seemingly impossible goal. Furthermore, the documentary did a fantastic job at capturing the emotions of the different members of the group; one could feel the tension, the nervousness, the excitement, and the happiness upon Petite’s success, and the buildup to that magnificent first step on the wire was immensely gratifying.
