Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Summary

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a man of mostly great formality. We can see Mozart as a romantic and caring family man, and in his writing style can see he had great respect for many of the people he was close with. In letters to his wife, he will often refer to her as his “dearest little” or “most beloved little” wife. At the end of his letters to his wife, he will often say things such as, “I kiss you a million times most tenderly, and am ever thine, true until death.” (240) The sweet words he says to her and his longing to see her again shows how much he cares for her.

We can also see the respect he has for his family in letters to his other family members. In a letter to his father, he expresses grave concern after hearing that he has fallen ill. He does not condemn his sister for not telling him about the passing of their father, but rather tries to understand her actions from her point of view. He also says to her, “be assured, my dear, that if you desire a kind and loving brother to care for you, you will find one in me on every occasion.” (234) This sentence alone demonstrates the aspect of personality he maintains when pertaining to his family.

Mozart was very passionate about his work. One can feel how excited Mozart would become as he/she reads the letters that he would send to his family and friends about his concerts or work that he has been doing. He can get caught up in writing about his experiences, which sometimes makes for very lengthy letters. It is easy to see how his love for music bestowed upon him the drive to keep improving and playing in more events.

Although Mozart was very kind to his family and friends, he could be very critical towards other composers. One example is in a letter to Archduke Franz when he says, “I venture to apply to the post of second kapellmeister, the more particularly that Salieri, the very able kapellmeister, has never devoted himself to the ecclesiastical style of music, whereas I have made myself completely familiar with this style from my youth up.” (248) He may show respect for his fellow composers, but will show disdain towards them and deride their credentials to prove himself as the better composer. He sometimes also uses cuss words to describe others, calling one man an ass.

In most cases, Mozart can be seen as a man with great character and moral intellect. Sometimes he may be very disrespectful of his peers but, in general, is a caring gentleman who wants the best for himself and his family. Though he passed at a very young age, he is still revered as one of the greatest composers in history. His passion for his craft is admirable and could be used as inspiration for ones own dreams and desires.
