Reading Questions 4/17/13

1. Do you think that institutions of HE actually care about diversity and affirmative action or is it all just for PR?

2. Do you think that the system of affirmative action needs to be changed to not just include race but to also consider socio-economic standing?

3. Since affirmative action acts as a quota system, do you feel that the system should be extended to corporations and businesses? Should employers set aside jobs for minorities as well? Where should the line be drawn?

4. Affirmative actions helps minorities get access to HE but should affirmative action be applied earlier? Is waiting for college too late?

5. In states that have banned affirmative action, do you feel that the institutions still hold a responsibility to achieve diversity on their campuses?

6. Do you think that affirmative action would work better if it was applied to certain high schools so that minorities would have the same access to education beforehand and then colleges could base admission on merit and disregard the factor of race?

 

Reading Questions 4/10/13

  1. Should students be “trained” to use computers and online tools in K-12 classes so that when they go to college they will have the same experience and knowledge?
  2. Should institutions move in a direction where classroom setting is replaced by online classes at the convenience of one’s home or is it necessary to maintain a physical interaction with classmates and professors?
  3. Is the funding for technology in schools too expensive of an investment considering that there is always something better out there after some time?
  4. If an institution was to an entire class to be taken online, how would one stop cheating, plagiarism, or even know that the person registered for the class is the one taking the online course?
  5. Do you feel that Ivy League institutions will be slow to act on the technology “bandwagon” since they have a model/ system that they have been following for years and years and might be hard for them to change?
  6. Do you think that online classes will catch on to HE and that the courses will carry over and earn students credits in accredited institutions?
  7. Are online classes more viable for for-profit institutions?
  8. In one of the articles it was said that students could take a test on the first day of class and if they passed that they would earn credit for what they passed on and then take classes on areas that they showed they were weak on. This is much like a challenger refresher class that EMTs take and the model works there so what would be the drawbacks of integrating this model into HE?
  9. If you could choose the model of education you were going to take, would you choose the traditional classroom model, the online model, or the hybrid model?
  10. If an institution was paying for computers and technology to enhance learning, would you be willing to pay higher tuition to receive access to all of those things?

Reading Questions 4/3/13

1. What is the advantage of paying so much more towards tuition for certain private schools when according to the results, there is very little to show that spending more per student leads to better educational outcomes?

2. One of the reasons that tuition is high in certain schools is that the faculty is “the best” and they must be payed a higher salary. Are funds being misused in order to pay teachers high amounts instead of helping students pay for college?

3. Should funds be allocated to keep tuition down or to increase the number of programs and classes offered at an institution?

4. Should students and parents have a hand in where schools are allowed to spend their money?

5. Is it more important to look at saving now in order to make future investments or is it better to make investments now that will have future benefits?

 

General Interview Questions

Is your college/university a model for others or is it based on the model of others?

Do you feel that the mission of the school is to just educate or do you feel that it is the responsibility of higher education to have students that are competent enough to be able to survive in the real world outside of a classroom environment?

As the President and symbol of your college/university, do you feel that there are things that you wish were being done but because of certain factors you were unable to? (Outside disapproval or inside disapproval)

Do you think that it is important to “level the playing field” by offering remedial classes to everyone or do you feel that that is unnecessary?

What is your institutions view on community service? Do you require students to commit a certain number of hours or is it something you just encourage?
