Learning Something New

I was one of the student curators that helped curate the 2012 Macaulay Snapshot exhibit. I enjoyed being a part of such a great group of students who are extremely creative and fun to work with. It was while working there that I came to know of something called Ascii Art. I am sure many of you have seen or heard about it on the day of the Snapshot. It is a form of representing pictures and images with numbers and symbols. I was fascinated on how its done by the software as one of the other student curators showed it to me. This just goes to show how you never cease to learn from your peers everyday.

For those of you that are not familiar with Ascii Art, here is a picture

    • well, basically she used a software that converted it for her. I don’t remember the name but it had options to change color etc etc. I think it designates like symbols to specific regions, it is supposedly easier to do it on buildings than on people

  1. I’ve seen this before. I had always thought that these pictures were made by actually typing in each number or symbol. I guess it’s a lot easier than it looks.

  2. Another brilliant example that shows how simple elements like numbers and symbols can create a work of art. Then again, art can come in a variety of forms but this is a new idea to me. Curious as to how the software converts pictures that are more complex.

  3. I always knew it was software that made these things. But in order to make the software, it would have taken a lot of work. (I’m in Python Engineering, and it takes a tooon of patients and time.) There are a bunch of these on the internet, this one is pretty good:

  4. Sneha, did you remember the name of the software? Is it free? I think it’d be cool to have Ascii art hanging around a house in picture frames than to have regular pictures. It’d be unique. ^_^

    • I am not sure about the name of the software, however there are online ways of converting pictures to ascii art.
