So after watching Les Mis, I ended up watching some of the performances of Les Mis done in the past. You can probably imagine my surprise when I found Nick Jonas in the 25th Anniversary Concert of Les Mis. You can hear him sing “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, which is Marius’ (The character that Nick Jonas plays) solo number. Personally I found his voice to be lacking compared to some other renditions of the song. It’s still a powerful performance, lacking the vibrato normally found in musical theatre performances, but still emotional nevertheless. The orchestral accompaniment is a bit more restrained in Nick Jonas’ performance, which actually works very well.
I saw that about a year ago. I was honestly surprised! It’s true that Nick Jonas’ voice is weaker than the voices of past actors portraying the character of Marius. His voice was also weaker than the voices of his fellow cast members (it is apparent when he sing “One Day More” with the entire cast). Putting that aside I found that Nick Jonas performed his role well regardless. It is still shocking because who would imagine one of the Jonas Brothers in Les Mis?
