“America the brave still fears what we don’t know”

Same Love

So this has been all over my Twitter and Tumblr for the past week and when I clicked on it and watched it, I loved it, and have been sharing it with my friends and listening to it since. The song has a beautiful meaning, and an extremely powerful message, helped greatly by the video. What I especially love about this is that the artist, Macklemore, doesn’t create a lot of music like this. To be blunt, his other songs I listened to are pretty stupid. He feels strongly enough about this subject though to take a stand and make a song expressing his ideas, regardless of what his fans expect from him, and I respect that.

Anyway, I thought I’d share this with you guys and see what you think about it, and if you enjoy it as much as I do. Also, the title of this post is one of my favorite lines from the song, because it can apply to so many problems in America (and other countries) and the mindset of so many people. If something can’t be understood and logically explained, a lot of people shy away from it and cast it away.

My Turkish Background

So I don’t really look it, but my mother’s side of my family is Turkish and Armenian and a few other random Middle Eastern ethnicities. The pictures I’ve posted show my background a bit and represent things in my home. The first one is the hamsa, it’s an evil eye in an open right hand. The evil eye wards off evil and envy.

The second picture is a traditional elephant chain with an evil eye at the bottom. The elephant in Turkey is a bringer of good luck, so these are displayed in doorways and sometimes windows to bring good luck into the home. The evil eye at the bottom is to once again protect. In my house we have several of these hanging (although they’re painted blue and white, not silver) in doorways to do just that
