Moskowitz, Peter. “For Local Residents, a Mission to Clean Up the Gowanus Canal.” New York Times [New York] 16 July 2012, n. pag. Web. 6 Nov. 2012. .
This is a New York Times article that was written by Peter Moskowitz on July 16, 2012. The Gowanus Canal was declared a superfund site in 2010 and both federal and state governments have been working on cleaning up the area ever since. However, the cleanup processes will take years, perhaps even decades, and many billions of dollars. Therefore, a few local residents have taken it upon themselves to do whatever they can to clean up this filthy body of water. A local resident, for example, attached a camera to a kite and let the kite fly over the entire canal. After retrieving the kite, he takes the camera, uploads the images onto his computer, and makes an interactive map: a map that anyone can view. Furthermore, many other residents have begun to view the Gowanus as their backyard and are tending to and caring for the place as if it was their own property.
This article does indeed have a slant as it does take into account the opinions of the government, which is also trying to clean the canal. Furthermore, the article does not offer the reasons as to why anyone other than these two dozen residents is unwilling to help in the cleaning process. The article focuses entirely on these few people and their efforts and in the process, fails to inform the reader about other claims and viewpoints.
