This article does not list an author but it is presented on the NYC government website, which might account for the very optimistic light the information is presented in. The article explains a new $140 million “aeration” system designed to improve water quality in the Gowanus Canal. The system is a more expansive version of the system already in use by the Flushing Tunnel – a process of drawing water from the canal, supersaturating it with oxygen, and sending it back through the pipes so that upgrading of the Flushing tunnel can proceed. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2013. The article also highlights the details of the three main components of the project – a wastewater pumping station, the Flushing Tunnel construction, and dredging of the canal in order to reduce sediment mounds and odor.

This article is relevant to our project because it describes one technical system put in place to alleviate pollution in the canal, specifically a system designed for the Flushing Tunnel which might become one of the stops on our map. It was written in 2010 so it would be interesting to find out how well the system has worked over the past two years, as the we know the canal is still heavily polluted.
