Gowanus Canal Gets Superfund Status

October 13th, 2012 · 1 Comment · Gowanus Canal

Navarro, Mireya. “Gowanus Canal Gets Superfund Status.” New York Times. 2 March 2010. Web. 13 Oct. 2012.http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/03/nyregion/03gowanus.html

The author,  an environmental writer for the NY Times, gives an overview of the impact of the decision to designate the Gowanus Canal as a Superfund site. She notes the politics surrounding the decision – the city government against the federal government; the EPA wanted it designated but the city wanted to begin the clean up with out the blight of the label, likely because many parties interested in developing the land would back out. There is good information regarding some of the facts of the clean up plan – it is expected to take 10 – 12 years, with a full clean up plan to be drafted by 2014, nine parties liable for the pollution have been identified including the city, Navy, Com Edison and National Grid, and 20 more are being investigated.

This article is a good model for formatting the introduction of our PodWalk script. It provides a succinct overview of the decision regarding the Gowanus and the plans for its future.
