Sears, Walter. “Steps to Improve Campus Sustainability.” Environmental Leader. 29 October 2010. Web. 14 October 2012.
Walter Sears is the Director of On Campus Acquisitions at Better World Books. Better World Books is a progressive company promoting both literacy for those in need worldwide, as well the reuse and recycling of books to reduce waste. The author first lists why creating sustainable campuses is so difficult. For example, a lack of infrastructure or support staff can hinder implementing new programs. He then goes on to offer possible solutions, such as uniting sustainability-minded faculty to create a support base. The author is speaking directly to administrators on campuses who can actually utilize his suggestions. There is a huge bias that appears at the end of the article. One of the solutions he mentions is partnering with existing programs. He later mentions how effective partnering with Better World Books would be for the goal of sustainability. Although some of his suggestions sounded logical, this huge weakness made me question the author’s motives. I still plan to investigate whether Brooklyn College is partnered up with any sustainability programs, perhaps even Better World Books.
Raises the issue of how the resources used to teach and learn (books, computers, electricity, etc.) affect sustainability.
