This is a surprisingly well made site (in comparison to ones made by or about Brooklyn College itself) of an organization that works in the same neighborhood as Brooklyn College. The source is of course a little self congratulatory and that should be taken into account. It is “fiscally sponsored by the Open Space Institute, Inc. as part of its Citizen Action Program.

The group engages in an number of initiates that they themselves subdivide into four areas: energy, park space, urban gardening and waste management. In terms of energy, their role is so far mostly educational, giving advice on tax credits to green energy systems and on how to install solar plates. They promote the use park space by hosting block parties, revitalizing small untended land and making tours of the trees planted on the sidewalks. Interestingly, this is advocated with a somewhat anti-car rhetoric. They also promote gardening by planting trees and as well as teaching. Sustainable Flatbush also helps with things like leaves collection to make less waste end up in the landfill. There are also programs that promote bike use.

As this group relies on grants and just judging by the number of pictures on the site, it is probably ever hungry for publicity of some sort. Therefore, we should contact them as well and see if they do anything on the grounds of the college itself. Quite probably, a large number of Brooklyn College students actually are part of this organization.

Brooklyn College used to have a relationship with Sustainable Flatbush. They had an office in SUBO, but are no longer there. I’m not sure how active they are now. When was the site last updated? It seems obvious that we should have a relationship with them if they are still active.
