Food Stores: Economy Candy

Economy Candy is every child’s (and adult’s) dream candy store. Candies from all over the world are sold in a tiny shop on Rivington Street in the LES.


When the store was originally opened in 1937, it mainly sold nuts, dried fruits, jams, crackers, and other foods that were popular with the store’s clientele, which was mainly Jewish. As the ever-changing neighborhood became home to new ethnic groups, the store has adapted by selling other types of candies.

 Since people from all over the world come to visit the shop, the store accordingly sells goods that may otherwise be only found in a different country.

The store is uniquely and overwhelmingly like stepping into Willy Wonka’s NYC candy shop-this place is the golden ticket! It is not an exaggeration to state that candy is stacked in shelves along every wall and on every counter.

Despite the new technology has developed over the years, Economy Candy has stayed exactly how it was since Jerry Cohen’s father opened the store. They have even kept this vintage scale that has been in the store since 1937! Listen to some things that Cohen has to say about the store and its change through its history:

Bags of dried mangos, cherries, pistachios, and other classic snacks sit across the Hershey bars, Halvah, Turkish Delight, Lindt Chocolates, and chocolate-covered pretzels. The surface has not even been scratched! Unfortunately, words and pictures do not do this store justice-  it is an experience like no other. But for now, you’ve got to see this:
