A location which many Chinese immigrants seemed to favor was Brooklyn’s third Chinatown, in Bensonhurst. With great expectations of social mobility, Chinese immigrants hoped to create a permanent home for themselves and their descendants, obtain affordable housing (as well as a bigger living space), give their children a good education, have their descendants work in professional occupations, and live in safer neighborhoods. Students who immigrated to New York often stayed after completing their studies since most employers sponsored immigrants from China have their nonimmigrant student visas adjusted to permanent residency status. The Chinese Student Protection Act continued to further grant permanent residency to Chinese students and their families between 1993 and 1994.
