Since the Italians dominated Bensonhurst since the 1950s, they were unaccepting of the new immigrants at first since the Chinese did not know how to speak English and did not assimilate to the national or local culture because they were focused solely on work. Also, they were seen as intruders by the Italians as they feared change and losing power. To prevent the Chinese from buying homes in Bensonhurst the Italian homeowners refused to sell to the Chinese, often excluding entire avenues, and placed steep taxes for Chinese purchasers. Often times Chinese immigrants would be charged a $5000 fee for purchasing a home in the area.
