It’s very disheartening to see so much trash in the city. At almost every street I turn into, there are piles of trash everywhere waiting for the garbage truck to haul it away. With the sheer quantity of trash in New York City, there has to be a better system of disposal for the future. The garbage everywhere makes walking through the city very unappealing since it not only takes up space on the sidewalk but it also smells awful. This problem won’t go away on its own so the city has to find a solution to this growing problem. Especially if there is a leak or a hole in a trash bag, all the liquids spill out onto the streets and sidewalks and it’s simply disgusting. The overwhelming amount of garbage truly taints the image of this city.

I didn’t really realize this when I first came to NYC, but its becoming more and more of an issue as every restaurant just piles trash in front of their shop on the street. This plus the pipes set up for construction really limits where you can actually walk. I wish there was regulation in the city where cities just have to store their trash within their building until around 9PM or something, a set time where trash could be collected. In a situation where there’s no space to spare, I can understand why businesses have no option but to pile trash onto the streets. But its definitely an issue that needs to be addressed.
I hate seeing trash on the street. Trash day brings out the rats and it scares me every time one runs out by my feet. However, the old cliche holds true: one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Just the other day, my roommate came home with an office chair he found on the street. I too do my fair share of treasuring, mostly when I need to ship something, I’ll take a free cardboard box off the street.
