Justin Bischof Bio

Hello! My name is Justin and I’m an actuarial science major.  Unsurprisingly, I want to be an actuary when I grow up.  I’m originally from Long Island and I’m currently living at the Baruch dorms.

I enjoy listening to music and occasionally reading.  I’m pretty good at soccer too, but Netflix is incredibly entertaining and I happen to spend more time watching shows rather than kicking the ball around.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Herrick Lam’s Bio

Hi Everyone! My name is Herrick Lam and I was born in Manhattan. I lived in Manhattan until I was 8 years old. My parents decided they wanted to move to Long Island and live in the suburbs, so we lived there until I graduated high school. After I graduated high school, my parents wanted to move again so that they could be closer to the city. So, we moved to Queens when I started school at Baruch. My intended major is finance, but I still don’t really know what I want to do.

Through all the years that I have lived in Long Island, I learned to play a lot of sports. I played basketball in elementary school. I ran cross country and track in middle school. I played tennis and swam competitively in high school. When I came to Baruch, I learned how to play table tennis, which is currently my favorite sport. In addition to sports, I have played the trombone for over 7 years. My other hobbies include playing chess, foosball, and video games. When I have free time, I like to hang out with friends or watch YouTube, TV shows, and movies.

I look forward to getting to know all of you this semester.

Makinoon Sami – Bio

Hi everyone,

My name is Makinoon, but I like to go by Mak. I am currently intending to major in Mathematics and minor in Marketing. Career wise, I am still trying to figure it out. I am originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh. But, I grew up in Jamaica, Queens.

I really love being outdoors, especially when the weather is not below 40 degrees. Some of my hobbies include biking and exploring NYC. When in Queens, I bike through Jamaica Estates whenever I get time and in Manhattan, I like biking through Central Park. I am also a big fan of hiking and go out hiking every fall and spring, which are best time for hikes in my opinion – perfect balance of the weather and nice views. When the weather is not so great, I like to watch shows on Hulu and Netflix. My current favorite show is Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but I also watch all the great standup comedy shows Netflix has.

I hope to get to know all of you through this semester and enjoy my fourth Macaulay seminar!

Anastasiya Malinouskaya Bio

Hello! I’m Anastasiya and I’ve had class with most of you already, but for the people that still don’t know me that well, let me give you a little background.

I was born in Belarus 20.5 years ago. My family moved around a little bit from Germany to Russia and finally to America where we landed on Staten Island. It is where I lived for 12 years. About 6 months ago I moved to Jersey City to live with my lovely boyfriend, even though I still spend most of my time in Manhattan; attending school at Baruch and Hunter, and also working in Midtown at a finance firm.

I’m currently majoring in Financial Mathematics. But I take German language classes at Hunter. I love the variety in my schedule, and the people are completely different at Hunter. I’ve never seen casual chess tournaments at Baruch, but at Hunter there is a whole floor dedicated to people playing chess. My education has been a rough ride, but I think I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel!

When I’m not studying or working, I love to read or cook. I read a wide variety of books, so I’m always open to suggestions whenever someone finds a really great read. I recently read a few books about Russian history, but right now I’m trying to get through The Goldfinch.

My favorite area of NYC has been The Financial District. When the weather is nice, my friends and I get together on the Pier, grab some food and spend hours just talking and enjoying the view. 2 semesters ago I got to learn about the history of FiDi from a tour that we did for IDC and it made me appreciate the area even more. This semester I hope to learn more about other areas of NYC and step out of my comfort zone to travel to other areas (I can get a little lazy when it comes to commuting).

Olha’s Bio

Hi guys! My name is Olha Sum. 2018 has been a selfie-less year for me, so I’m using this old and boring picture where I have long(ish) brown hair.

I’m currently an Advertising and Marketing Communications major and a part of Ascend at Baruch. However, I’m planning on transferring to Hunter for the Fall 2019 semester. Hopefully, I will be allowed to transfer as a Macaulay student, but even if I can’t, I will still transfer. All of the business-related courses I’ve taken at Baruch and the club I joined made me realize that business is just not for me. I intend to major in Language and Rhetoric at Hunter and then hopefully get a masters degree in Speech Pathology (there are certain prereqs for the Speech Pathology program that only Hunter offers) which is my end goal.

I draw/sew/edit videos for my YouTube channel when inspiration hits me. I love unconventional music, reading books, and watching independent movies. I’m also a huge GOT/ASOIAF, ATLA, and MCU geek. I’ve lived most of my life in Ukraine and I don’t really know much about New York’s policies. But I live here, I love the city and care about the environment, so I’m looking forward to what we’ll learn here. I’d love to get to know you all!

Hugh’s Bio

Hello. My name is Hyosik Shin but Hugh is a lot easier to pronounce. I’m the guy to the right of the image (left is my dad). I’m not a fan of pictures so I unfortunately didn’t have a picture of just me. I was born in Korea and am a sophomore. I am in the process of applying to Cuny BA to “major” in psychology and computer science. I want to work in virtual reality therapy in the future and find innovative, specialized means of treating those struggling with various mental issues.

I am currently an Honors and Macaulays ambassador, a writer for the Ticker, and the treasurer and chair of events for Conversation Partners. In my free time I like to play video games and read. However when I have a lot of time, I like to compose and aspire to produce music as a hobby. I’m really into music and love to play, listen, and make it. I’m also a big Lego fan.

Jun Huang

Hey everyone! My name is Jun Huang. I’m a sophomore majoring in CIS and I’m still deciding my minor. It’ll most likely be marketing. I was born in China and lived there for 6 years before I immigrated to the United States.  I have lived in Brooklyn ever since. I’m currently working as a web developer and technician for Baruch at the 6th floor computer labs. Feel free to drop by and visit me ?

Currently, I’m part of Baruch Ascend and the Macaulay Business Club. Many of you are business majors so I definitely recommend checking out our club. Shameless plug for our club: http://macaulaybusinessclub.com

Outside of school, my hobbies are quite diverse. I like coding, eating expensive food (btw the Cousin’s Maine Lobster has the best roll/toast in the city, but it is like $18), ice skating, paintball, biking, airsoft, and table tennis. There’s not much of a correlation between these hobbies but I usually get to do all of them (except 1 or 2) each week.

I look forward to meeting and working with you all this semester! Stay warm!

Kay Chang

Hey y’all, my name is Kay. I’m from Staten Island. My nationality is Korean and I’m bilingual as well as proficient in Japanese. Currently an accounting major with a double minor. I’m in the 5-year program and plan to go on the forensic accounting track after I graduate. I’m currently working at a firm in the tax service line. Also a freelance Carvel Ice Cream cake decorator back at home on the weekends.

On campus, I’m a part of Alpha Phi Omega. I’m also involved with USG Philanthropy, KSA, and ZUTS. Outside of school, I love to travel, I’m planning to go to Iceland next. Other interests that I have are working out, boxing, fashion design, streetwear(re-selling), skateboarding, seeing friends and just having good vibes with good people. A hobby that I really enjoy is photography since I was a little kid. It’s the last seminar that we have, I haven’t had seminar with most of you, so it would be really cool to meet everyone this semester 🙂

Pabvitraa’s Bio

Hi everyone! My name is Pabvitraa Ramcharan. I’m a sophomore double majoring in Economics and Political Science. I was born, raised, and currently reside in Queens. Attending Townsend Harris High School in Flushing, Queens exposed me to the world of politics, leading me to work on a grassroots State Senate campaign (we lost, though) and volunteer at the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs for Materials for the Arts. I prefer tea over coffee, probably a remnant from the British colonial days of Guyana, where my parents are from. When I’m not sipping tea, I enjoy writing for our college’s student run newspaper, The Ticker, where I have been featured multiple times in the “Opinions section.

I’ve studied three languages, Spanish, Italian, and Latin, the latter of which I received two summa cum laude awards, and hope to one day become fluent in all of them. Other pastimes include visiting museums, watching Al Pacino in The Godfather trilogy and Scarface, learning the ultimate strategy in the board game Risk, binging The Great British Baking Show, and spending time with my parents and friends. In the future, I hope to intern at the NYC City Council and pursue a Master’s degree after graduation. This class is definitely useful for understanding the NYC policies that affect us all, and I cannot wait to understand our role in preserving our ecosystems and communities!

Ingrid’s Bio

Hey guys! My name is Ingrid Gendler. I’m double majoring in Political Science and Communication Studies (w/ a concentration in Rhetoric/Public Advocacy) and minoring in History here at Baruch. My goal after graduating is to go to law school. I’ve previously worked as a tutor and as a fundraising/administrative assistant at a non-profit. Outside of class, I’m part of the organizing executive board for TEDxCUNY, CUNY’s annual student run TEDx conference, held in the spring. It’s a really great event and I would encourage you all to go!

I have lived in Brooklyn all my life and I really love it. My favorite place in Brooklyn is the Alamo Drafthouse movie theater, where they serve you really good food while you watch the movie. I love watching all kinds of movies and shows, and my all time favorite show is Mad Men. I also love going out to eat and trying different foods, and my most recent favorite spots are Mr. Taka on Allen St. for delicious ramen, and Tiny Shanghai on Mulberry for amazing soup dumplings. On the weekends you can usually find me hanging out with friends or in Boston visiting my sister. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all this semester!
