This week I came across an article discussing how in the next 25 years, England can run short of water. People will not have much of a clean water supply and prices of bottled water will increase. The article states
”
In the speech, Bevan says: “Water companies all identify the same thing as their biggest operating risk: climate change.” By 2040, more than half of our summers are expected to be hotter than the 2003 heatwave, he says, leading to more water shortages and potentially 50-80% less water in some rivers in the summer.
The population of the UK is expected to rise from 67 million to 75 million in 2050, increasing the demand for water. But Bevan says the average person’s daily water use of 140 litres could be cut to 100 litres in 20 years by more efficient use in homes and gardens. Currently, about a third of water is lost to leaks or wastage.
”
In other words, the cause of Englands water shortage is due to climate change. People will have to cut their water intake for personal use and agricultural use. The water is wasted on a daily basis but this isn’t only in England. In my hometown of Albania, my cousin sent me a photo earlier today of the lake we use to play on, almost as dry as a bone. The water use to make the lake almost 20 feet deep. The insane climate changes have dried up lakes and it becomes a domino affect that hurts everyone.
That photo makes me think about the devastating impact of our carelessness toward earth’s resources. Whats really startling to me about the disappearance of freshwater sources like these lakes, is that freshwater is already a scarce resource, and if we don’t do more to protect it we run the risk of completely running out.
