Con Edison’s New Initiative

A major part of sustainability in New York City is having an efficient and sustainable electricity system. In pursuit of this goal, Con Edison is beginning a new initiative where they plan to install approximately 5 million “smart meters” across New York City by 2022. Con Edison is very excited about this new initiative and they have listed a variety of benefits that the smart meters will provide for New York City residents.

First and foremost, Con Edison is excited that these new smart meters will allow for a much smoother and easier transition to solar energy. Second, is that residents will no longer have to wait for their meters to be read and that their electricity usage bills will no longer be estimated. Third, is that these smart meters will notify Con Edison of a power outage and thereby allow for Con Edison to speedily fix the problem. Lastly, these smart meters will allow New York City residents to make greener choices to help the environment.

I believe that this new initiative by Con Edison is extremely pertinent to our class mainly because it will hopefully indicate a positive attitude towards more technological innovations in pursuit of sustainability. As we continue to search for other methods that New York City can adopt to improve sustainability, it is important to be able to look at real-life examples such as Con Edison’s smart meter.
