US DEBT!?!

We all have seen this clock whenever we visited Union Square. Like most tourists, I thought the 15 digits represented the US Debt. While the digits are very close, current US debt is about $21,000,000,000,000- so the clock is off by 1 digit.

The following video explains what each clock digit means.

  • Let’s say the first 7 seven digits are 1133483 – means that it has been 11 hrs 33 mins and 48.3 seconds since midnight.
  • The 8th digit isn’t really that important.
  • And, the last seven digits are 3112612 – meaning there is still 12 hrs 26 mins and 11.3 seconds until midnight.

Walk it, Lit it

Ever imagined how much electricity is being used for ads on Times Square? Con Edison estimated that The Theater District uses about 161 Megawatts of electricity at once – which is enough to power 161,000 average US homes. One solution could be smart energy floor installation.

European startup Pavegen introduced their energy floor installation that takes in kinetic energy generated from pedestrians walking to provide electricity to nearby street lamps. The founder of Pavegen showed in a video how 5-10 steps on the floor could light up a small sign. Now, imagine the thousands of tourists walking in Times Square and how much energy could be generated through their steps.

Pavegen’s installation of smart floors in Washington DC costed about $200,000, each square foot costing about $75-$160 to install. While the installation prices seem expensive, it could save New York City millions of dollars by installing smart floors that would otherwise go into the power behind billboards, electric signs, and street lamps.

Focus on outer neighborhoods too!

I am sure all of us have seen these wifi stations all over Manhattan. But, when you come down to Queens, there’s barely one or two in every other neighborhood. The further you go from Manhattan, the less you see. I don’t think I have seen one in Jamaica, which is in the border of NYC and Long Island. The same goes for Citi Bikes. Only accessible Citi Bike stations are near Astoria, which is one stop away from Manhattan. I wonder what these stations could indicate socio-economically. For example, compared to Jamaica, Astoria’s rent prices are very high, it has way more fancy food places and parks, and it’s very close to Manhattan.

New Projects more like New Problems

This picture was taken near Jamaica, Queens. It is a picture of a new apartment building being developed. Recently, there have been many residential apartment buildings being built in this area. To my surprise, some of these buildings are aesthetically pleasing and provide very elegant office spaces. But, even with the beauty of the buildings, I can’t help but wonder about how high the rent could be for these apartments.

This area is also becoming increasingly popular among South Asians to move in and look for houses because the area is filled with South Asian owned groceries, bakeries, clothing stores, etc. And, landlords know that very well. My own landlord lets go off old tenants when their contract expire and look for South Asian tenants who would be willing to move in even if she raises the price by 200-300 dollars.

This place also isn’t too far from Long Island City, where Amazon would’ve built its headquarters. If another tech giants decides to move into Queens, we could be talking about exponential raises in rent and living expenses.

Best view of NY

Whenever people think of nicest views in NY, they usually think about top of the rock or freedom tower. Why pay when you can get that for free? I think Dumbo, Brooklyn is one of the best parts of New York. You want views? You got it. You want good food? You got it. You want to play soccer while enjoying the sunset and downtown Manhattan? You got it. You want high rent prices? You got it…

This picture was taken on a day I was exploring Dumbo- this place brings back happy memories from high school. I usually visit to play sports or ride a bike. I didn’t expect the weather to be really nice in the middle of winter. Just like the previous posts mentioned no matter how trashy New York seems, there is a beauty to it and you can find that by exploring.

Makinoon Sami – Bio

Hi everyone,

My name is Makinoon, but I like to go by Mak. I am currently intending to major in Mathematics and minor in Marketing. Career wise, I am still trying to figure it out. I am originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh. But, I grew up in Jamaica, Queens.

I really love being outdoors, especially when the weather is not below 40 degrees. Some of my hobbies include biking and exploring NYC. When in Queens, I bike through Jamaica Estates whenever I get time and in Manhattan, I like biking through Central Park. I am also a big fan of hiking and go out hiking every fall and spring, which are best time for hikes in my opinion – perfect balance of the weather and nice views. When the weather is not so great, I like to watch shows on Hulu and Netflix. My current favorite show is Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but I also watch all the great standup comedy shows Netflix has.

I hope to get to know all of you through this semester and enjoy my fourth Macaulay seminar!

"I agree busy stations like this need renovations to help commuters get to their destinations on time. But, what you think about the new 2nd Avenue Q train stations that were developed in 2017? They are huge, but I personally feel like they should've not used the entire $4.45 billion on them and could've used the portion of the budget on improving busier subways and train lines."

"I would say it would be better to implement punishments or fines instead of providing incentives. People usually don't go out of their ways for a small incentive but they want to avoid punishments and fines. It doesn't have to be as specific as fining someone for not recycling. It could be something small like that if somebody throws trash in the subway, they get a $20 fine. This will really make the person think twice before throwing out their trash because I wouldn't want to pay 20 dollars for a small plastic bag or bottle."

"I understand your point on buying small trees to store it at home - many do that for aesthetically pleasing instagram pictures. But, what do you mean by fighting industrialization? We need factories to manufacture the goods we consume. I do think there should be more community oriented volunteer programs to motivate people to plant trees and take care of their surroundings."

"I was thinking of this as well, the other day I saw a couple of people going jogging in Manhattan. If you really want the exercise, why not shovel the snow, am I right?"
