Untitled (Autumn Foliage, Rhododendrons, Apple Blossom, Rhododendrons

Elizabeth Booth Duveneck

1882

The artist lines up 4 gold-bordered panels of artwork, each being rectangles placed longitudinally. Each panel has a different artwork of a flower, and with the title being Autumn Foliage, Rhododendrons, Apple Blossom, Rhododendrons, it can be inferred that those flowers are displayed in that order.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

We decided that the artwork shows the ‘4 shades of autumn’, and the subtle depiction of the plant life at the time. The description of the artwork also tells a very dramatic and tragic story of Duveneck’s career, and we believe that this art piece is a depiction of their appreciation for the simple things in life.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

One recurring color that we identified that was rather uncharacteristic of the ‘autumn’ theme was white, which can also bring about a monotonic coloration across the art piece. We believe that this can correlate with Duveneck’s perceptions of the four seasons, with the white representing a hint of sorrow.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

line up next to each other to be able to compare them. gold outline to accentuate light and dark colors within paintings.
