Statue of Metjetji

Unknown

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This is the third statue of a set that depicts the growth and political progression of Metjetji, an official in Egyptian culture. This version of him uses the most expensive materials of the set with stone eyes and copper inlay around them, representing and honoring the peak of his career as it culminated in his position as senior official. It was placed in his tomb in celebration of his life.

This painting depicts a birds eye view of a tall Church surrounded by even taller skyscrapers. The colors of the building are warm and neutral and having the Church near the building offers this ‘overshadowed’ feeling.

Trinity Church and Wall Street, 1929

Bertram Hartman

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

There is a present contrast between the spiritual nature of the Church amid the modern Manhattan buildings. It can also represent the past contrasted by the future. The Church has this gothic essence in a time where the stock market crashed. It feels as though the Church is observing the city and noticing all the affairs that is going on.

Modern reconstruction of a new kingdom model of a temple gateway

Charles Edwin Wilbour Fund

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

We believe that the artist is trying to portray what ancient Egypt looked like in a more elegant manor. Although there is a gate, there is nothing behind it indicating a start to a new world.

Everyone is walking together in a group, seemingly equal, but there is inequity with the clothings. The two black children don’t have shoes on (walking on dirt) even though they are dressed the same as the white boy. The white women have hats on while the black Women habe head wraps. Very interesting.

There are Native Indians minding their own business. They look happy. There is a dead deer from the hunting that recently happened. They are chasing a loose horse. The artist lines up 4 gold-bordered panels of artwork, each being rectangles placed longitudinally. Each panel has a different artwork of a flower, and with the title being Autumn Foliage, Rhododendrons, Apple Blossom, Rhododendrons, it can be inferred that those flowers are displayed in that order.

Untitled (Autumn Foliage, Rhododendrons, Apple Blossom, Rhododendrons

Elizabeth Booth Duveneck

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

We decided that the artwork shows the ‘4 shades of autumn’, and the subtle depiction of the plant life at the time. The description of the artwork also tells a very dramatic and tragic story of Duveneck’s career, and we believe that this art piece is a depiction of their appreciation for the simple things in life.

There isn’t an obvious story being depicted here, but rather representation of a highly respected force in Saqqaran culture. Perhaps Jackals were honored or even prayed to by the ancient Egyptians.

Seated Statuette of Pepy I with Horus Falcon

Egyptian Alabaster probably from Upper Egypt

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

There isn’t really a narrative but it serves a still image which captures the devotion and order of perhaps the Egyptian religious order and values. It seems to capture this particular Egyptian’s devotion and portrays him as a tool to serve his religion as opposed to an individual through his rigidity and lack of expression.

The sculpture is of a nude woman with an athletic body type. She’s laying back with her stomach contracting. Her face is facing away from her audience, as if she is completely comfortable in her nudity, not afraid of any judgment that eyes may hold. While the front of her physique is clearly feminine, her back is very masculine and muscular. She is made up of dark bronze and has a smooth texture.

The Awakening

Maurice Sterne

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The contrast between masculinity and femininity. Her back is very broad to show that she puts in as much work as a stereotypical man would. However, because she is a woman, the part that people see are her feminine aspects, her sexuality. People do not appreciate the work she puts in.

It’s a colorful oil painting of two people arm wrestling. There’s animals, shapes (stars), a lot of abstract elements to the painting.

The Arm Wrestle of Chip & Spike; aka: Star-Makers

Oscar yi Hou

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

There are two people arm wrestling who we assume to be related because they have similar features. There are stars with letters/numbers on it. There are animals such as rams and birds.
We think the story that’s being told is wrestling with one’s identity when you’ve experienced multiple. The emotions on these people’s faces might not reflect how they truly feel. On the outside they look very stoic but we assume that they’re tired and wrestling with their emotions.

The Morning News

Fredrick James Boston

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This painting goes against stereotypes of women in the kitchen. It is rare in the 1880s to see a woman in the working class pick the newspaper over performing household duties, such as doing the dishes in the kitchen. This wealthy female is reading the newspaper without caring to do the dishes.

The artwork depicts an elegantly dressed woman with her hands on the wall, stopping to glance at herself in a small oval mirror hanging next to her. She stopping slightly forwards, her hands lifting the dress a little, as if readying to flee. There is no other objects on the wall.

Un Regard Fugitif

Mary Shepard Greene Blumenschein

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

We see a woman just glancing at herself . As aforementioned, she is stopping slightly forwards, her hands lifting the dress a little, as if readying to flee. The painting captures a very curious expression on her face; perhaps she is scrutinizing her face and her appearance just for a moment before she heads out to wherever she needs to go. Her lifting her dress is an indication of her getting ready to either walk out.
Another story more serious, where she is looking in the mirror to search for answers to her troubles and she is lifting her dress, as if she is ready to fleeing from her current life and tribulations.

The statue that is supposed to be middle aged is thinner, shorter, and is not holding a staff. The figures are also painted.

Statue of Metjetji

Uknown

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

These figures were placed in the tomb of an official named Metjetji. They depict him at different stages of his career. Since these were placed in his tomb their purpose may have been to display the good work he did for the Pharaoh and Egypt across his entire life. This could then help him when his heart was weighed before he would be allowed to enter the afterlife.

Modern Reconstruction of a New Kingdom Model of a Temple Gateway

Charles Edwin Wilbour Found

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

There is not particular for this piece of art. Instead it is a reconstruction dedicated to providing context to Egyptian worship. Though it does convey a lot about faith and the system of the Pharoah as the pharaoh is repsetned on Osiris’ body and on the sphinxes. It also shows how religious worship is structured by allowing for a realistic representation of religious temples which is a gateway to their Gods.
