A white scuplture made of marble in the shape of an enslaved woman with chains around her wrist with one hand resting on what seems like a curtain.

The Greek Slave

Hiram S. Powers

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The woman is enslaved and her statue depicts a fight for independence, one that is universal across different cultures and different points in history. This one in particular seems to be referring to the struggle for Greek independence but was reinterpreted and reused throughout history as a symbol for the fight of freedom.

The photo is gigantic. It takes up the entire wall. It has a lot of contrast between light and dark and represents america pre colonization.
There are native Americans hunting deer, water flowing off of a mountain, bears blending in with the darkness, and I mean encapsulates all of Native American huntinghood and the setting in which they lived.

A stork in the Rocky Mountains

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The artwork utilizes chiaroscuro to portray the beauty of the Americas pre colonization but the looming reality of colonization. The bird in the sky emphasizes the sheer size of the landscape.

Our piece consists of a serene mountain landscape with trees, a lake running through separating two areas of land. On the right reside a small community of Native Americans.

Mount Hood, OREGON

William Keith

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

We see a peaceful community of Native Americans, immersed with the nature, not interfering with the nature. The story we see is that they are temporarily residing on this piece of land and possibly following their food source, which may be buffalos. However this piece captures them settling temporarily while the sun slowly begins to come down.

The painting overall is split into 4 corners with each divided into 2 triangles, depicting 8 scenes of women in total.

For the Women’s House

Faith Ringgold

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

A painting to show women empowerment by showing all the ways that women can be apart of society, especially in roles often seen as just for men, such as a police officer, construction worker, basketball player, etc. The painting doesn’t just show women working, but also doing other activities like getting married and dancing. One on the scenes shows a mother and has a book open of a quote by Rosa Parks: “I knew someone had to take the first step…” This quote connects to the other panels, as it shows that for women to be able to do and be anything, someone had to take the first step to make it happen.

A canvas that is slowly rotting away with bits of the canvas being left on the floor. The painting itself is 3d to convey the artist’s message of the destruction of the serene land picture.

Fallen Bierstadt

Valerie Hegarty

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The artist criticizes the stereotypical landscape paintings of the era of Western Expansion. Rather than paint an idealized picture of nature waiting to be colonized, the artist directly shows the resulting destruction when colonizers invade and steak Native American territory. This differs from other idealized Western depictions of the bright future of colonists who utilize the land for their selfish benefit to build new communities because the artist choose to show the perspective of how Native Americans would feel about their land being colonized. By making the image 3d the artist attracts the attention of the viewer to the acknowledge the physical display of environmental deterioration when colonizers invade the land and use it for their own purpose without regard to those who peacefully resided there and originally protected the land.

“A Cliff in the Kaatskills” by Jervis McEntee depicts a rocky cliff overlooking the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. The rocks of the cliff seemingly form a face crying out in despair. The oil on canvas painting has a texture that gives a grainy impression of a cold autumn day on the rocky cliff.

A Cliff in the Kaatskills

Jervis McEntee

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The sun is setting on the Hudson Valley as the anthropomorphic rock face calls out into the clouds. This scene seems to represent a Native American impression of the rapid change in New York State. The clouds gradually covering the sky represent the changes that came with industrialization. This one sentimental space that has since become a tourist destination represents how American culture trivialized indigenous culture.

Land scape painting of a US mountain and forest range. You can discern the mountain a mountain side on the top with a waterfall and a big pine tree on the left. In front of the pine tree there are 2 bare tree. The bottom half of the painting is charred to bits that lie on the floor, caused by a fire started from the bottom. The painting is framed by a golden frame.

Fallen Bierstadt

Valerie Hegarty

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

Fallen Bierstadt is a clever critique on American westward expansion. It uses physical deterioration to serve as a reminder that romanticization of the American Midwest is directly built on the ashes and destruction of Native Americans by colonial settlers. The charred bits and pieces symbolize the damage to the environment and the loss of Native American culture, which highlights the protection of nature. Overall, the piece impressed us using its unconventional form and changing the narrative of the original art piece it depicts.

Heat by Florine Stettheimer

Heat

Florine Stettheimer

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The scene depicted is a mother’s birthday celebration which doesn’t look celebratory despite the bright colors of the foreground. The women in the front look younger and lying down looking tired in the heat of summer. In the middle of the piece, a different band of color, are three women sitting more upright. The women furthest up is wearing black and is the oldest. The subtle differences in colors and poses evoke aging. In the background, are weeping willows, which are dying, contributing to the visual references to aging. The composition places the mother, we presume, in the back, despite being the person being “celebrated.” There’s a cat clawing at the younger women could represent the anxiety of being independent, due to their mothers old age.

This art piece is warped, it looks as if it has been lit on fire, with many of its piece burned off and spread beneath it. The painting is of nature with trees, mountains and a river that flows between them.

Fallen Bierstadt

Valerie Hegarty

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This art work has blood splattered on it in nature. Pain and struggle is portrayed throughout the piece. The piece depicts a beautiful landscape that is tarnished by charred holes and a bent frame. The juxtaposition between the peaceful environment and the disruptive nature of the paintings preservation sends a powerful message: beauty is only in the eye of the beholder. What one might consider beautiful might be something completely different and completely to a different viewer.
