Fallen Bierstadt

Valerie Hegarty

2007

This art piece is warped, it looks as if it has been lit on fire, with many of its piece burned off and spread beneath it. The painting is of nature with trees, mountains and a river that flows between them.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This art work has blood splattered on it in nature. Pain and struggle is portrayed throughout the piece. The piece depicts a beautiful landscape that is tarnished by charred holes and a bent frame. The juxtaposition between the peaceful environment and the disruptive nature of the paintings preservation sends a powerful message: beauty is only in the eye of the beholder. What one might consider beautiful might be something completely different and completely to a different viewer.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The colors are very soft and subtle closer to the sky, with the fresh greenery of nature in the background. As you look down, a dark contrast and blood is splattered across. It helps us understand that things are not always as they seem, even in the most beautiful scenarios there can be pain and levels of unknown emotions.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum chose a variety of objects to display, each one portraying a story that someone can relate to and find meaning and interest in. There are objects displaying pain, history, artifacts, and stories of culture and heritage that everyone can connect with.
