Egyptian alabaster

2288-224/2194 B.C.E

Its a model sculpture of a Queen nursing her child. Evokes a typical Egyptian pose. Queen is holding child protectively as he clasps her hand.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

It depicts the care and love Mothers provide for their children. The child sitting on the mother’s lap indicates the support mothers give their children. In a way, it symbolizes the undying love of mothers for their children as they lay down their lives and give their blood sweat and tears for their children to survive. In all, it symbolizes unconditional love and support.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

There is a geometric shape to the art piece that builds up. This infers a hierarchy and power structure between the mother and the son. Moreover, the size with the mother being bigger than the son indicates power. Thereby showcaing the power of the Queen who had strength not only in providing care for the nation but in the home for her child.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The sculpture was placed under a light to emphasize its importance to emphasize its importance to Ancient Egyptian culture and its connection to modern day society and familial relationships.
