Face from a Coffin

Dynasty 21

1070-945 BCE

The piece is made of wood, depicting a face with emphasized eyes and eyebrows in hieroglyphic style. Its covered almost entirely in red paint except for the white of the eyes. The forehead is cut off and it looks almost like a mask. The emotion of the face seems pretty content because of the slight curve in the lips.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The work of art is from a coffin, showing that the person inside is resting peacefully. It represents a style used frequently in Dynasty 21.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The Egyptian hieroglyphic style places emphasizes the lines of the eyes and eyebrows. These features are the only ones that are defined with black and the rest is red. The pupils are also very dilated and captivate the viewers attention. These features show the influences of the art over time and how they developed their own distinct style.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

By putting the object hung on the wall in a glass case makes it seem almost as if we are making eye contact with the face. It makes it more personable and human.
