La Habana Sunset

Jose Parla

2021

Blue sky sunset in the wheat fields with colorful roots covering the painting

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

We see an adventurer traveling to different fields, observing different sunsets.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

We notice heavy use of various colors. It looks like the artist silly stringed a sunset painting which makes it very unique. Up close, the painting looks messy, but you can notice the individual scrapes. When looking at the painting from far away, we see the clear horizon line and the colorful roots blend into the painting more. The color emphasizes the sunset and how the white and pink shows the ground. The darker color on the lower half of the paintings shows more of the ground level.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum purposely displayed 4 other paintings by Jose with different sunsets to tell the story of how the artist traveled the world to see these sunsets. It helps us admire the different colors of sunsets and how they all connect to each other.
