Burning Wood

Marsden Hartley

2023

A Picture of driftwood lying at sea.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This work of art is designed to showcase deforestation and this area of sea now cluttered with driftwood was once a shelter environment for animals.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

A lot of color contrast, thick lines, the wooden canvas compliments the burning wood, perspective is used here to showcase the overflowing of wood is being too much of a cluttered mess and it’s starting to pile up.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The wooden canvas compliments the burning wood creative aesthetic and the museum workers carefully placed it in a general display named “Changing Landscapes”. There was also the concerted effort to place it into an area named “Mazaruni River” which showcased a similar polluted water display that represents the immense conflict that the world finds itself in.
