The Greek Slave

Hiram S Powers

1868

It is a marble sculpture of a naked petite girl with a low braided bun with curly hair. Her wrists are shackled and she holds a cloth while looking down on the ground.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

We see a young girl enslaved during the war and this is evident by her shackled wrists. Her soul almost feels nonexistent as her eyes depict signs of losing hope.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The sculpture has a smooth and white surface. There is a dark gray mark on her cheek and calf.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum chose to put the figure under shining light to cast a shadow behind her. This demonstrates how her soul is leaving her body because she is a hopeless slave. The wallpaper where the shadow is on is a cool purple instead of white so the shadow is emphasized with a deeper purple.
