A painting of President George Washington in something that looks like his study room.
What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?
We saw how George Washington displays his regality and power, especially when looking at his left hand, where he holds a luxurious sword, and the room he is in is also clearly extravagant.
What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?
I noticed the lighting was very clear, and how the room is very bright and detailed in contrast to George Washington, who wears black, simple clothing. It helps make him to stand out.
What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?
It’s clear that the framing is meant to build on the regality and loyalty being the president, especially the sense of authority he brings to the table. It shows an idea of power and is recognized when he walks into the room.
