Towards the left in the background, Native Americans and Settlers can be seen by a body of water. This pet takes up a third of the piece. The other two thirds, there are wild animals and children.
What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?
The story depicted is Native Americans and British settlers interacting with each other.
What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?
The people take up a third of the painting, the animals the other two thirds. The people seem to be in the background. The color of it is dim. This helps us make sense of it, because it shows that everyone is living among each other.
What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?
This piece is the first thing we saw after getting off the elevator. We think that the museum chose to do this because it’s like a gateway to the other pieces on the floor.
