La Habana Sunset

José Parlá

2021

there is a painting of a sun coming up behind a layer of paint that is thrown over the painting. the layer of paint looks like someone poked a hole in the bottom of a paint can and let it swing over the painting.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The painting is an example of how colors come together to create a masterpiece. The canvas exhibits an almost sunset like appearance with blossoms of pink leaves.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

There’s a variety of colors that’s pulled together by the different colors of strings. There’s also a focal point with the sun and the texture of the painting is pretty thick, while the background seems smooth.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum chose to place the painting with a white background to put an emphasis on the different colors. In addition, it’s also in a very empty space. The paintings are also in an order where there’s the sunrise leading to the sunset.
