Charles Edwin Wilbour Fund

1070-945 B.C.E

This artwork is seperated into three levels, the tomb can be found on the bottom that contains hieroglyphics on the exterior. The center level is the cover that goes on top of Pasebakhaienipet, placed next to the cover are gold earrings of Pasebakhaienipet. The last level is cover of the coffin that has the face of Pasebakhaienipet with his hands crossed over his body.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The story we see in the work of art is one depicts the passage it takes to go into the afterlife. In the tomb, there are images of the god of the dead, the goddess of the afterlife, and the god of the sky. Each play a crucial role in the ability to be enter the afterlife. The stone of the tomb shows stability and longevity for even though parts are tearing the color and words are still clearly reflected in this work of art.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The eternity symbol is bold and black, and is able to teach us the crucial story of the test in the afterlife. This test is a final judgement that involves the weighting of ones heart against the feather of truth, this is done to make sure the person is pure of heart. This visual representation of eternity plays into understanding why the artwork was made. The stone resembles the earth, the bright blue is like a sky, the size is a big way to express the importance of the pharaoh and his journey to the afterlife.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

I saw many Egyptian tombstones in another museum and a difference was the way it was displayed for the viewers. This was displayed as three different parts/compartments and so I was able to really able to notice the fine, intricate details that I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
