Modern reconstruction of a new kingdom model of a temple gateway

Charles Edwin Wilbour Fund

Unknown

It’s a big gate with two large pillars on each side. I’m front of the pillars are two men and sphinxes next to them. The gate looks to be made of marble and iron.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

We believe that the artist is trying to portray what ancient Egypt looked like in a more elegant manor. Although there is a gate, there is nothing behind it indicating a start to a new world.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

There are a lot of dull colors like matte white and black, accompanied by gold to bring out the contrast. Below the piece is ancient hieroglyphics that wraps around the whole sculpture.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

I believe that they meant to put it next to a much older model that was worn down and destroyed through time.
