Street Scene

George Benjamin Luks

2027

The painting depicts a New York market filled a bustling crowd composed of various groups of people. The scene is very crowded with individuals going about their daily routines/errands. In the background, the rest of manhattan can be seen along with a crowd stretching towards the horizon.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The story is depicting a market scene as people are walking around and picking up groceries among other items.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The background is blurred out, making the viewers eye focus on the center scene. The painting is also not very bright apart from the peoples’ faces, drawing focus to their expressions.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The gallery is depicting New York from different perspectives and ethnic groups, as other paintings are depicting Indigenous people in New York as well as the industrial city. The painting isn’t depicted in a very bright manner making it blend into the dark nature of the room, especially with the walls which are painted dark grey.
