Tropical Scenery

Frederic Edwin Church

1873

It’s a painting of a scenic landscape, there are greets in the foreground, there is a little girl in the middle of the painting alongside a river, the background has a town. The sun is peeking through the mountains showing off a nice beautiful sunset.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The painting shows a woman embracing nature being isolated from civilization.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The sunlight painted by the artist draws the audience’s attention towards certain elements of the piece, specifically the river and the woman shining in the light. The town is depicted in the far background which emphasizes the appreciation of nature outside of civilization.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum made a great choice in displaying Hispanic culture among all the other art pieces. This piece is exquisite in showing a new perspective to people new to the Museum
