The Great Deep

Frederick J. Waugh

1909

This painting is mainly done in the blue scale. there is sky in the high ground, and on the foreground is waves that look a little like mountains.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The story comes from a painter who was sailing the sea and decided to capture a moment of lifetime because the seas are ever changing. Different stories are developed through different lenses of the sea and the viewer’s connection especially through the different lighting and angles in which it’s seen.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The texture of this oil painting is something you can really see, it also really works with the waves. Makes it look 3D. There are different tones of blue giving the overall artwork a sense of depth. The blue gives the artwork a moment of loneliness while the bright sky a moment of comfort and freedom, making it feel almost romantic and dreamy.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The painting is located in the center of this space, which is what you see when you first walk in. It is also hung on a purple wall which we don’t believe it giving the painting justice, it kind of takes away from the painting. In addition, this painting doesn’t fit in the theme with the other artworks on this wall at first glance. Once you read the blurb, however, you notice everything relates to America and its history in some type of way. The statue next to this painting is about the chinese exclusion act where both center around movement.
