Stela of Maaty and Dedwi

Charles Edwin wilbour Fund

2170 to 2008 BCE

This is a slab of stope with hieroglyphics and other Egyptian symbols. The text appears red orange and lime colors and they appear to be engraved in. It looks about 3 feet by 2 feet.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This work of art shows gender roles in Egyptian society. From what is apparent, there is a women walking behind a man. The dark colors demonstrate dominance (the male is a dark color) whereas the light colors showcase femininity.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

I noticed that the test for the most part is aligned in a horizontal straight line much like how we rad modern languages. The main part seems to be the two people in the bottom middle which suggests what the focus of the price should be. The two people are also bigger which stresses that. This may also give insight for the chronological order of the story as well.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum placed the art upright so it is visually appealing for the viewer. This makes it easier for one to make out the story of the piece. The lighting of the room adds to the aesthetic of the picture.
