Reflections

John Henry Twachtman

1893-94

The view along the banks of the Niagara River captured within the fleeting moments of a summers day. As the river flows peacefully, Mother Nature creates a dynamic in a seemingly simple perspective.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The picture reflects a possible path taken across the flowing river as the wind sways the leaves and water. The viewer is able to visualize a pathway to escape normal daily life.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

You can perceive the waves on the water, as well as, the swaying of the trees due to the shadows in the painting. You can also get a sense of a dreamy state because of the use of light perceptions of color by the painter in the French Impressionism.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The paintings around it add to the feeling of the art piece. It contributes to the feeling induced by the entire exhibit, since the dreamy feeling is shared across all of the paintings around it. To represent the entire Impressionist era. This also adds to other countries adopting and evolving these art styles due to the artistic rebellion.
