My Tipi

Teri Greeves

2010

This is a medium sized tipi that shows a different beaded person on each fold of fabric. The people are intricately composed of beads and feature bright, bold colors.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This work of art shows different frames of life, family and culture. The tipi represents the community found in the tribal nation’s way of life. It also to bring awareness to climate change and how projects like pipelines make their land uninhabitable and diminish their culture.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The bead colors are bright and bold bringing a lively feel to the tipi. Having those eye catching colors makes you feel the tipi and it’s family is coming to life.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

They put it in a glass box so you can see all side of the tipi tapestry. We like that they put it with other items of cultural importance because it gives you more historical context.
