In the Mountains

Winslow Homer

1877

Four women dress in colloquial clothing are climbing up a mountain. the mountain is clam however picks up later into to painting. Three women are wearing blue however one is wearing light blue. The last woman is wearing green. There are small trees on the maintain nearing towards the direction the woman are facing in the painting. While the women have no faces, the emotion is still present.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

In this artwork there are woman outdoors hiking on a mountain. They are wearing lots of clothing. During this time period women weren’t allowed to leave the house very often and explore. Even thought there faces are not completely shown and despite the hot Sun beating down on them(from the color change of the hats) they are happy to be out.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The dark mountain behind the woman can tell us the weather. It is cloudy in certain areas but in the spot that the woman are standing it is sunny. The land is a lighter brown/black color. Additionally the hat on top is a lighter pink color but underneath it is red so it shows the sun is on them.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The museum placed this painting around paintings that were made in the same time period. The three painting along this wall all depict the same idea of woman hood and embracing femininity. The placement, while seemingly unimportant, displays a story along the wall in only three frames.
