Ghosts of the Forest

Marsden Hartley

1938

A pile of white logs aside a riverbank with tree’s lining the horizon.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

It portrays the effects of deforestation as a result of the industrial and shipbuilding industries.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The logs do not have straight edges they looked to be destroyed not cut. There is texture and shading on the logs as well.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

It is displayed in a gallery called changing landscapes. It sits among other paintings that depict environmental effects and changes to local landscapes.
