jar made in two parts

el ma mariya

3500-3100 BCE

There’s a circular beige bowl with marble in it cut in a half. It was likely used for cooking or grinding. There’s a hole at the top through which one can take off the lid of the bowl. It has a pattern similar to sedimentary rock because of the appearance of layers with different shades.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The bowl gives off domestic bowl vibe. It is as though a mother is cooking a meal for her kids. The fraying and warping of material shows it’s use!

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The light shining on the marble emphasizes the marble which also gives the sense that people of the time were dependent on rock and stone.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The bowl has a huge spotlight, it is not on a shelf like its brethren bowls. Its showcase shows it floating, it’s open basin facing the audience, allowing us to see the amazing marbling and experience put into the jar.
