Frontline Flashpoints Facing East, Ukraine, 2022

Maya Hayuk

2022

Geometric shapes with yellow and blue tones.
It has an illusionary depiction to it.
A long panel hanging on the wall made of birch with acrylic paints.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

It’s a long, continuous panel of blue and yellow squares. The artist is trying to draw attention to the bright and vibrant colors that represent Ukraine so the visitors and those who are passing by can be reminded of Ukraine’s ongoing war that is affecting all of us in todays world. By making use of simple shapes and symmetric images she is trying to make connection to the war in the frontlines.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

Maya used straight lines, bright colors, high contrast, symmetric objects, and her work demonstrates a sense of balance in it. This artwork is done on birch with acrylic paints.
The artist utilizes layering to add richness and complexity to her artwork.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The art piece is hung up in the main area/center of the museum where a lot of potential viewers can stop by and look at the painting. It is installed in that specific location because it is vast, large, and eye capturing. Considering it’s bright colors it is a piece that has great potential in drawing a large audience to the artist and her other works as well. After viewing this, our group wanted to find out even more details about that the artist.
