Unknown Chokwe Artist

1906

Strategically designed wooden chair with round copper accents all over the chair with carvings of people and animals. The chair seat is worn down.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The seat itself is worn down as if people have used it many times before. The chair shows of everyday life for the Chokwe people. The seat is ceremonial so it would mean that it was important for the people

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The ceremonial chair has been used many times before as depicted by the worn seat. Since it is depicted as ceremonial it can be inferred that it was used by people coming of age. The chair has brass accents put subtly over the chair which signifies it was an important metal to the people.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The chair itself is ceremonial which would make it an important piece for the Chokwe people. It being ceremonial would make it historically important. Its fine details and motifs would make it interesting for public viewing. Its intriguing designs is what drew us to the chair.
