Blooms of Mold: Miami Sunset

Jose Parla

2021

The painting is colorful. The upper half resembles a sunset. The cloud-looking spatters were white but were overlaid with pinks, oranges, and yellows. The lower half of the painting has many colorful lines that resemble strings. The lines are yellow, white, brown, and red. All the strings come from a yellow circle, which resembles a sun. The strings are textured.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

All the strings/lines are tangled. They start from the sun, representing a birthplace. It might symbolize a connection with humanity. They might be lines of communication. The scene is not calming, rather it looks aggressive. There are no blues of purples, just greens and warm colors on the bottom half. This could represent growth or life. They look like roots.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

Composition includes horizontal and diagonal lines. The sun is off-centers. The clouds and sun rays are in the direction of the sun. It looks like a perspective paintings.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The paintings are in the same collection and so they are all next to each other.
