The Awakening, circa 1926

Maurice Sterne

1877-1957

This is a naked woman, her breast are showing but her legs are positioned in a way where the rest of her body is covered. Arms are up but the face looks worried.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

I think the person is worried, they look tired or like they are currently going through something. However, they are naked being being naked created a sense of reassurance for her and the human body

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

This sculpture looks made out of medal and it’s big, it’s almost like they want you feel like you are there with them. The nipples are very detailed so maybe they want that to be the attention. The light is shining bright on them and the color is almost like a dark silver

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

I think the museum purposely put it under the light so it can be seen and it’s plastered up maybe so it wouldn’t be missed
