Seated Couple

Jalisco artist

100 BCE -300 BCE

As we see the image we felt a physical connection between the two people in the sculpture. One figure is helping the other drink water, which demonstrates a certain intimacy that we particularly resonated with.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

Two people are eating together, and are helping each other eat. As one holds the bowl the other eats. Both are quite close to each other and are clearly kindred spirits.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

This sculpture is brown and rusted clearly from the weathering that has taken place over time. You can see the impressions made from the artists hands.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The object is well lit, within a glass/ plastic casing. The object is right next to the front entrance of the room, signifying the importance of it.
