Mazaruni River

Alexis Rockman

1994

A large crimson red body if water. Above it is a sliver of a gorgeous landscape. Within this body of water we see dead plants , piranhas, and an ignuana. Dark red paint it splotted in the water.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

Cilmqte change and greed referring to human resources. Humans are so busy going after natural resources (gold) that they ignore how we are affecting our environment.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The mass of the water is filling most of the canvas which makes the red feel overwhelming. Massive of fish gives your perspective of depth. We can also relate this to sea level rise which is especially a convern for NYC.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

The framing is especially important. It is a simple wooden frame which helps bring attention to the stark crimson body of water.
